TimJ>I feel we are tinkering with a system that has a limited life, how is the research on cocoboard going?
TimJ>We are gradually accumulating money for our own server, when we spec it, we should take into account cocoboards requirements, hence the requirement to do some research.I have thought a bit about this, (if I was convinced I am sure I could have found the time to install HyperNews).
I am not expecting to lose multiboard.pl because
it is, or will be, a working system, which has had a lot of
corners rubbed off it. If, as is likely, we have a request
to install a message board for a customer I would use it as a starting point,
the code is a lot better than the original from Matts Script Archive.Secondly I don't expect that anyone will be bothered to port the current
messages to any new system, and I wish to keep our history as
I think it is the best introduction to us as an organisation (history defines culture).Thirdly, I wish to ensure that Paneris can be ported to a low
spec machine with minimal software, hardware and setup requirements, so
adding a difficult step, such as installing HyperNews, will make
Paneris more difficult to port and less 'ours' (not written here syndrome). There are good reasons not to use personal email clients.
Two slogans spring to mind: the network is the computer and
Openness, Openness, Openness.
We have all had disk crashes, with subsequent loss of history.
Your Email clients history is not accessible to other members of paneris and so
should not contain unique, Paneris related, messages. If we really are wedded to our email clients then we can always rip the
email handling routines out of CoCo Board or HyperNews and install it in
multiboard.yours
