I think the line that you are complaining of is
870 in htmlutil.pl,
which removes all /r s as these tend to get put in by netscape, so if you don't
remove them trhen you get you document munged with double spaces (on windoze anyway).

So the answer is yes it can be done but worse consequences follow.

What should I do?
