Published to coincide with the 400th anniversary of
the birth of van Dyck and to accompany a major exhibition of his work in Antwerp and
London; this is the first book to focus on van Dyck's remarkable landscape drawings.
The thirty known landscape drawings by Anthony van
Dyck are among the most beautiful of their kind to survive from the seventeenth century.
Ranging from views of towns or woodland to studies of flowers and plants, they are imbued
with a distinct atmosphere and drawn with astonishing delicacy and economy. This
exhibition brings together as many of these works as possible from collections around the
world and examines them alongside works by van Dyck's master, Rubens, and contemporary
artists such as Claude, Poussin and Rembrandt.
Illustrated with over 60 colour reproductions of
original works, this book traces the rapid growth of sketching from nature in the
1620's and 1630's and explores van Dyck's place in the European-wide context of landscape
art and as the originator of the British watercolour tradition.
